There has been a great atmosphere around the event and the school. Everyone seems to have enjoyed cycling, scooting or walking either whole or half journeys in the mornings and afternoons. it may take more preparation and involve leaving the house earlier in the morning, but it's worth it!
Thank you to everyone that made the effort and it is hoped that children and adults alike will continue to take the healthier option, leave the car behind and enjoy each others' company and the better weather.
Well done to all the children who decorated their bike, scooter or flicker for today. There was a real splash of colour to the day.
There will be a presentation of small tokens to the winners in each class and year next week.
The Big Pedal will take place between Monday 23rd April and Thursday 3rd May, 2018. It is the UK’s largest schools’ challenge that encourages children and adults to walk, scoot or cycle to school. There are points awarded for each child and every adult that takes part. Our journeys are logged each day and go towards a daily and overall score not just locally, in Northern Ireland, but throughout the UK.
Please note that half journeys are included, whereby the first half of the journey to school is made by car, etc. and the final part is made by foot or bike / scooter.
There will be three special days during the event which will provide extra excitement and colour to the challenge.
All you need to do is encourage your child / children to cycle or scoot to school every day during the event, and join them on their way – parent and sibling journeys count too!

Safety is very important to St Mary’s PS and we have developed an Active School Travel Policy to help encourage safe travel to school. The decision as to whether a child is competent to cycle, walk or scoot to and from school safely rests with the parents / guardians. We would encourage parents / guardians to consider cycling / walking with their children to and from school, encouraging children to wear bright clothes to help them to be seen by road users and helmets for cyclists. Please have a look at the St Mary’s Active School Travel Policy for further information and advice.
Primary 1 and 2 children should store their bikes or scooters in the fenced area behind Mrs Rooney’s and Mrs Mc Aneney’s classrooms. Primary 3 and 4 children should lock their bicycles to both sides of the railings at the front of the school. Primary 5, 6 and 7 children can lock their bikes in the Key Stage 2 yard.
Padlock keys should be given to your son’s / daughter’s teacher for safe keeping. Helmets can be stored in the lockers at the bike shelters in the Key Stage 2 yard or alternatively brought into your child’s classroom for safe keeping.
For everyone’s safety children and adults are asked to dismount at the school gates and walk their bikes into and out of the school. We thank you for your co-operation.
