The Big Pedal 2018

The Last Day of our Participation in the Big Pedal 2018.

There has been a great atmosphere around the event and the school. Everyone seems to have enjoyed cycling, scooting or walking either whole or half journeys in the mornings and afternoons. it may take more preparation and involve leaving the house earlier in the morning, but it's worth it!

Thank you to everyone that made the effort and it is hoped that children and adults alike will continue to take the healthier option, leave the car behind and enjoy each others' company and the better weather.

Superhero / Colours Day 2018

Day 7 was Superhero / Colours Day and it is always well supported. This year was no different ! There were lots of children dressed in their favourite colours but there didn't seem to be as many Superheroes about ! They could have been flying away rescuing the world ! Nevertheless, well done to everyone that dressed up and supported the Big Pedal 2018.

Day 4 and our position on the local and national scoreboard continues to rise.

Numbers of children riding their bikes, scooters and flickers continue to rise and so too do the numbers of those walking to school. Up also are the number of adults or as the Big Pedal call them supporters. Well done to everyone and keep up the good effort. Our position on the local and national tables is high. There are 4 days left so let's keep pedalling onwards and upwards ! Tuesday 1st is Superhero or Colours Day when everyone is invited to dress up as their favourite super hero or wear their favourite colour to school. This event is always well supported and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

Bikes, Scooters and Flickers Everywhere on Day 3 of the Big Pedal

The good weather seems to have encouraged lots of children and parents and guardians to choose feet over metal and are riding bikes or walking to school each day. It is wonderful to see so many people with bikes and scooters on the approach to school and in the school grounds. The more that are seen to be riding and walking will actively encourage others to do the same. Well done everyone !

The first Morning of the Big Pedal 2018 !

There was a good turn out of cyclists, scooter riders and walkers on the first morning of the Big Pedal 2018. In previous years the launch day has been either snowy or wet, so this morning was a welcome treat ! Congratulations to all those who took the healthier option and left the car or bus behind ! The number of journeys will be entered into the computer tonight and St Mary's will get a progress report and placing, both locally and nationally.

Below is the Power Point presentation to launch the Big Pedal 2018. It previews this year's events using new photos and photos from last year.

The Big Pedal will take place between Monday 23rd April and Thursday 3rd May, 2018. It is the UK’s largest schools’ challenge that encourages children and adults to walk, scoot or cycle to school. There are points awarded for each child and every adult that takes part. Our journeys are logged each day and go towards a daily and overall score not just locally, in Northern Ireland, but throughout the UK.

Please note that half journeys are included, whereby the first half of the journey to school is made by car, etc. and the final part is made by foot or bike / scooter.

There will be three special days during the event which will provide extra excitement and colour to the challenge.

  • On Tuesday 24th April pupils can have their postcodes marked on their bicycles / scooters. A special letter seeking permission and an up to date record sheet accompanies this letter. It should be completed and returned to your child’s / children’s class teacher as soon as possible.

  • On Thursday 26th April pupils are encouraged to dress their bike or scooter up in whatever way they want. There will be a selection of small prizes for the best decorated bike or scooter per class.

  • On Tuesday 1st May we are encouraging our pupils to cycle or scoot to school dressed as a Superhero or wearing their favourite colour, whether that is a dress, jumper, t-shirt or football jersey. The choice is theirs. Please note that only children that cycle or scoot to school on that day should wear non uniform.

All you need to do is encourage your child / children to cycle or scoot to school every day during the event, and join them on their way – parent and sibling journeys count too!

For more information about the event go to www.bigpedal.org.uk

Safety is very important to St Mary’s PS and we have developed an Active School Travel Policy to help encourage safe travel to school. The decision as to whether a child is competent to cycle, walk or scoot to and from school safely rests with the parents / guardians. We would encourage parents / guardians to consider cycling / walking with their children to and from school, encouraging children to wear bright clothes to help them to be seen by road users and helmets for cyclists. Please have a look at the St Mary’s Active School Travel Policy for further information and advice.

Primary 1 and 2 children should store their bikes or scooters in the fenced area behind Mrs Rooney’s and Mrs Mc Aneney’s classrooms. Primary 3 and 4 children should lock their bicycles to both sides of the railings at the front of the school. Primary 5, 6 and 7 children can lock their bikes in the Key Stage 2 yard.

Padlock keys should be given to your son’s / daughter’s teacher for safe keeping. Helmets can be stored in the lockers at the bike shelters in the Key Stage 2 yard or alternatively brought into your child’s classroom for safe keeping.

For everyone’s safety children and adults are asked to dismount at the school gates and walk their bikes into and out of the school. We thank you for your co-operation.
