Mrs McCann's Primary Six
Welcome to Primary Six. We hope you enjoy seeing some of our work and activities. We have a very busy year ahead of us!
St Mary's Got Talent
Several acts performed in our class in the auditions for our talent show. Teagan and Orla, with their gymnastics routine, and Oliver, playing the tin whistle, were voted to perform in the final show.
We have really been enjoying the new accelerated reading scheme. So much so we decided to review some of the books we have read, in a more unusual way.
To hear our reviews, scan the QR codes with your phone or iPad, using any QR scanner.
New classroom displays
Technology and Flight
We carried out several experiments to help us learn about the forces that act upon a plane in flight. We then designed and flew kites. It took us a while but we soon got the hang of flying them.
Reading with Primary 2
Miss Sloan invited us to her classroom so we could be reading buddies for P2. We each read a story to our P2 buddy, then we read one together and finally our P2 buddy read one to us. We were very impressed. We are hoping we might be invited back and we really enjoyed reading with P2.
Birds of Prey
Ian Patterson came in to show us his beautiful birds of prey. He showed us Alba the barn owl, Fluffy the tree owl and Bill the kestrel. He told us lots on interesting facts about the birds and we learned so much. Some of us even got to hold them!
We designed and built our planes using everyday materials and objects in the home. We tried them out in the hall to see how well they flew - some flew much further than others. We learned that there are many factors involved in a good plane, such as the weight, the aerodynamics, the shape and how well it was thrown!
We have been continuing our work with Lisa and have been experimenting with printing. We sketched an outline of a bird onto polystyrene and then using ink and rollers made bird prints.
Congratulations to Niall, Evelyn, Preston and Oliver who received certificates for 100% attendance from September to December.
Our new topic is Flight and we have been busy creating some new displays using our art and technology knowledge. We chose a bird to make a collage of, which required us to think about how we could add different materials, such as feathers, and make them stick. We also learned some sewing techniques and made some beautiful felt butterflies.
An artist Lisa Brady came in to work with us on Tuesday afternoons. We looked at landscapes and in particular those of the artist Seamus McSweeney. We made different shades of blue and green and examined the effect they had when blended with other colours. Our final paintings of the Mourne Mountains turned out great!!
As part of our PE this term we are doing gymnastics. We have been exploring different ways of travelling and balancing using different equipment.
As part of our Harry Potter topic we designed a spider which could move up and down using a winding mechanism.
C2k Newsdesk Spooky Story winner
We really enjoy reading and commenting on the news articles on the C2K Newsdesk and we were excited to take part in the Spooky Story competition held before Halloween. We were even more excited when we discovered we had a winner from our class. Aidan was selected from nearly 1000 entries. David, the editor of the Newsdesk, came to visit us to present Aidan with his winning Newsdesk goodie bag and certificate. Well done Aidan!
Dressing up for Halloween
We have started to make our classroom colourful and bright by adding our work to the displays.
This week we have been looking at large numbers - ordering, comparing, writing.
