As part of the school’s ‘Global Education’ and ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ initiatives we, in Primary 4 researched the story of RYAN HRELJAC and the Ryan’s Well Foundation. His amazing story details how he set out to raise $70 to help build a well in Africa and when realising the true extent of the problem, decided to do more. The story is all the more fascinating due to the fact Ryan was still in Primary school, the full story can be read at www.ryanswell.ca.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
All children have a right to good health and good quality health care. All children should have clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so they stay healthy. Article 24.
Children should not be allowed to do work that is dangerous or might make them ill, or stops them going to school. Article 32
All children have the right to an education. Article 28
As part of our research the pupils learnt that some children in Africa have to walk up to 5 miles in the hot sun to collect water. At times the water is still too dirty to drink and carries infections. To help with their understanding the children were tasked to, in a small way, replicate what this journey would be like by carrying a heavy bucket.
To finish our lesson the children decided to compose a prayer to all the suffering children in the world.
