Walk to School Day 2015

each child that walked to school was given a Travelwise, I Walked to School sticker along with a shiny, silver pencil to show our appreciation and to reward their efforts. Congratulations to all the badge and pencil recipients. Well done !

Walk to School Day 2015

Walk to School Day 2015 was a great success. Thank you to all who supported the event by taking the environmentally friendly and healthy, active option. It also enabled many parents to enjoy the walk and extra time spent with their children in a manner that they would not usually do.

Bike It Wear your Favourite Colour to School / Superhero Day 2015

Wednesday 13th May was the day chosen for our Bike It, Wear your Favourite Colour to School / Superhero Day. It was to replace the previous date in March that was to be part of our participation in the Big Pedal. Unfortunately, it snowed in March and it rained in March so we were very limited in the number of days that we could actually walk, cycle or scoot to school.

There was a fantastic turn out today of bicycles and scooters. There were a lot of children and adults that took advantage of the beautiful warm weather and left the car at home and got the benefit of a lovely walk to school. Thank you and congratulations to everyone that made the effort to take part today !

The Big Pedal 2015 !

The Big Pedal 2015 ! 1
Mr Prenter with Pamela Grove White, Sustrans co-ordinator and area representative for Active Travel and the Big Pedal, with the children who braved the driving snow early on Monday 2nd March to either cycle or scoot to school on the first of 15 school days that mark the Big Pedal 2015.

The Big Pedal Powerpoint Presentation

Big Pedal Letter to Parents / Guardians

Get set… we’re taking part in the Big Pedal again, a giant inter-school cycling and scooting competition encouraging children, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their daily commute!

The event is powered by Sustrans (sustrans.org.uk), funded by the Bike Hub (bikehub.co.uk), and it’s happening from 2nd to 20th March. It’s totally FREE to enter, and we’d love everyone to be involved.

The details

Each day there is a Sustrans wheelie character to collect and add to our Big Pedal wallchart, and the more people who cycle and scoot, the more powerful our wheelies will be. We want to fill our wallchart with as many superhero wheelies as possible. We’ll be competing against other schools right across the UK, and if we clock up the most bike and scooter journeys, we’ll win!

Why we’ve signed up

The children really enjoyed the Big Pedal 2014, so we have re-entered for 2015 ! We think it’s a fantastic way to get more of our pupils on their bikes and scooters and have fun getting to school. And it’ll be great to compete to become one of the UK’s top schools for two-wheeled journeys, not to mention our chance to win some brilliant prizes. We think you’ll enjoy less congestion outside our school gates too!

What’s next?

All you need to do is encourage your child(ren) to cycle or scoot to school every day during the event, and join them on their way – parent and sibling journeys count too!

For more information about the event and details of prizes, go to www.bigpedal.org.uk

Success stories

Do you have an interesting story about your child cycling to school? Are they happier since discovering cycling? Has cycling changed family life? If you’re happy to share your story, get in touch with Megan Phillips in the Sustrans press office: megan.phillips@sustrans.org.uk, or 0207 780 7209.

We uploaded lots of photographs to our school website of the event and Superhero Day which proved to be a great success. We will be doing the same this year. Superhero Day is the last day of the event, Friday 20th March. On that day we hope to see as many cyclists as possible dress up as their favourite Superhero !

Get involved in our new campaign!

As well as taking part in the Big Pedal we hope you’ll wish to support children walking, cycling and scooting to school in other ways. We’ll be launching a UK-wide campaign to improve the journey to school and enable children to more easily get there by bike or foot. We would like children, teachers and schools to take part. To hear more about our campaign please email campaign@sustrans.org.uk and we’ll send you further information on how to get involved.

Lastly, Please remind children to dismount their bicycles and scooters when they reach the gates of the school to avoid knocking over small children. Bikes are not to be ridden within the school grounds. All children must wear a cycle helmet and should remember to chain their bike or scooter to one of the bike stands or the railing around the school as the school cannot be held responsible for damage or theft to bikes or scooters.

Active Thursday has been a great success ! Thank you for your efforts in completing the following journeys. Everyone has played their part and got the benefit of leading a more active and healthy lifestyle and, hopefully, on the non frosty and dark, damp morning, have found a little bit of extra enjoyment on their journey to St Mary's !

Active Thursday

We are implementing Active Thursday. On each and every Thursday in February, the girls and boys are being asked to cycle, scoot or walk to school. It is to promote a more healthy and active lifestyle. Part journeys are also encouraged, whereby, for distance or safety reasons, part of the journey to / from school is in a car and the final part is either on foot, bicycle or scooter.

While we appreciate that this activity is only in February and that it is very much weather dependent, we would still like to see as many as possible walking, cycling, scooting or part travelling.

A running record of the total journeys by foot, cycle, scooter and combined will be available here each night.

St Mary's Active Travel Policy 2014 / 15

At St Mary’s Primary School we encourage pupils and parents to travel to school by cycling, scooting and walking wherever possible. To help with this we are working with UK charity Sustrans to make sustainable and active travel easier for everyone.

This school travel policy explains how we will be encouraging active travel to school. We will discuss the policy with the pupils and re-visit it periodically to ensure its relevance. For pupils unable to come by foot or bike, we encourage use of public transport or car-share.

If you have any ideas to improve things at or around school for pedestrians and cyclists, or questions about travelling to school, please get in touch with Mr Fusco or Mr Prenter or your Sustrans Schools officer Pamela Grove-White, email: pamela.grove-white@sustrans.org.uk

Some of the benefits of active travel:

  • Improving both mental and physical health through physical activity
  • Establishing positive active travel behaviour
  • Promoting independence and improving safety awareness
  • Reducing congestion, noise and pollution in the community
  • Reducing the environmental impact of the journey to school.

To encourage pupils to cycle or scooter to school frequently the school will:

  • Actively promote cycling and scooting as a positive way of travelling
  • Celebrate the achievements of those who cycle and scooter to school
  • Provide cycle and scooter storage on the school site
  • Provide high quality cycle training to all pupils who wish to participate.

To make cycling and scooting to and from school a positive experience for everybody concerned, we expect our pupils to:

  • Ride sensibly and safely and to follow the Highway Code
  • Check that their bicycle or scooter is roadworthy and regularly maintained
  • Behave in a manner which shows them and the school in the best possible light and to consider the needs of others when cycling or scooting
  • Wear a cycle helmet
  • Ensure they can be seen by other road users, by using lights and wearing high-visibility clothing, as appropriate.

For the well-being of our pupils, we expect parents and carers to:

  • Encourage their child to walk, cycle or scooter to school whenever possible
  • Encourage their child to take up opportunities to develop their competence and confidence in cycling or scooting
  • Consider cycling or scooting with their child on the school run; possibly joining with other families as a ‘cycle train’
  • Provide their child with equipment such as high-visibility clothing, lights, a lock and cycle helmet as appropriate
  • Ensure that the bicycles and scooters ridden to school are roadworthy and regularly maintained.

Please note:  The decision as to whether a child is competent to cycle or scooter safely to and from school rests with the parent(s) / guardian(s). The school has no liability for any consequences of that decision. Parents are advised to take out appropriate insurance cover for bikes (check home insurance) as the school’s insurance does not cover any loss or damage to bicycles and scooters.
